Daytime Television

Every once in a while
You find yourself sick
Or on a vacation
And you turn on the TV
And you find all sorts of goodies

Old re-runs of Mary Tyler Moore
Or Saved by the Bell
Full House
Jeffersons
Bewitched

Talk shows
Maury
Jerry
Montel

Commercials
For lawyers
Have you been injured?
I’ve fallen and I can’t get up
Endless pools
Chia Pets

There’s something about daytime TV
That’s comforting
It’s more relaxing
Laid back
Not as in-your-face
Or loud
And desperate to get your attention

You wish you could be sick
Tired
And weak
All your life
And just laze there on the couch
Feeding your head with everything daytime
All day
Every day

But you can’t

You have to eventually rejoin normal reality
Work at the office when all the good TV is on
And be forced to be so tired afterwards
That all you have energy for
Is to go home
And watch all the loud primetime TV
Which seems angry
And negative
And abrasive
It seems to rot your soul
And make you even sicker
Spiritually sick
But not sick in the way
That’s going to make you stay home again
So that you can watch the good stuff
