Watching the Waves

Standing here
On West Dennis Beach
Staring at the waves
Listening to them crash

My mind’s racing
Trying so hard
To have a poetic,
Epiphanal moment

I pace the shore in bare feet
I jog a bit
About a mile up
And another mile back
Turning my head out to the ocean
Soaking in the massive, beautiful Atlantic
Peering as far as the sliver of Nantucket on the far horizon
Hoping the deep thought comes

But nothing comes

I came here in search of a deep thought
Some sort of insight into my life
A revelation I could maybe even write about

But there’s nothing…
Except this:

Real poetry comes
In the least poetic places
Look no further
For revelation
And insight
Than what’s right under your nose
