Noodles in the Pool

The boys are in the pool
Whipping foam noodles at each other’s heads

I’m in awe
By how angry they seem
There’s a desire to hurt
And dominate the other

The parents sit in their lounge chairs
Making sure their kids don’t drown
But they’re indifferent about the fact
That the kids are beating the shit out of each other

Boys will be boys, they suppose
Let them learn to fight
To fend for themselves
So that they’re not pussies their whole life

I continue watching the boys
And I wonder where the violence comes from
Whether it’s from nature
Or nurture

I come to no definitive conclusion
All I know
Is that it scares me
